In 1997 - during a six-month period - I had three books published. That was the good news. The bad news was that each of these books was on a different subject: Writing, Selling and Parenting.

Facing limited resources (a phone and a fax machine) I made a decision to focus on just ONE of those books - Always Kiss Me Good Night: Instructions on Raising the Perfect Parent by 147 Kids Who Know (Random House, 1997).

Working by myself, I got booked on the Leeza TV show, NPR, CNN and more than 100 radio shows. I also got press in the Dallas Morning News, Woman's World Magazine and a variety of newspapers and journals. The result? Always Kiss Me has sold more than 150,000 copies to date. (If you're looking for a benchmark, a Best Seller is book that has sold 50,000 copies. That makes Always Kiss Me a "best seller" three times over.)

As a result of my marketing and PR efforts for Always Kiss Me, I went on to sell two more books about kids to Random House (each for significantly greater advances). From there, I launched my own publishing company, Shake It! Books. My first two books - How to Be The Almost Perfect Husband and How to Be The Almost Perfect Wife - have gone on to sell more than 250,000 copies to date. Who made it happen? Me. No PR agency, no big bucks.

What happened to those other two books? With little PR, they did not sell well.

What have I learned from all this?

1. It's important to focus your efforts.
2. It's better to be an expert on ONE subject than THREE.
3. You don't have to hire a big time PR agency. (I did that with my first book - If You Can Talk, You Can Write - and blew $5,000, with very little to show for my money.)
4. You can do it all - on your own - with a nominal financial investment.
