To help you Shake That Brain! and discover solutions for maximum profit.

IN THIS ISSUE:

1. SOLVING THE WRONG PROBLEM
2. NOTHING ELSE

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

PICTURE THIS: A man facing a firing squad, twenty rifles aimed at his heart. Afraid of loud noises, he sticks his fingers in his ears.

NOW PICTURE THIS: A woman driving a brand new Mercedes. Smoking a cigarette, she’s careful to blow her smoke out the window. (Takes a drag, EXHALES out the window. Takes a drag, EXHALES out the window.)

WHAT DO BOTH SCENARIOS HAVE IN COMMON? They’re both examples of people who’ve managed to solve a problem. Only problem is, they’ve both solved the WRONG problem. As H.L. Mencken put it:

"For every human problem there is a solution
that is simple, neat, and WRONG."

Consider, for example, the growing trend among states and many countries to ban the use of hand held cell phones while driving – despite a body of research (both from Canada and the United States) demonstrating that hand held phones are not the problem per se.

"With speech-based ... hands-free devices there has been an implicit assumption," says Joanne Harbluk, human factors specialist for road safety and motor vehicle regulation at Transport Canada, "that there will be NOT be a negative impact on drivers and driving performance."” Harbluk’s study not only challenged that assumption – it disproved it.

At the University of Utah, David Strayer, Ph.D., has compared the effect of handheld vs. hands-free phones and come to the same conclusion: "We’ve noted no safety advantage for using a hands-free vs. a hand-held phone. It’s conversation that drives this effect. When you’re talking, you’re impaired." Yet legislators – failing to QUESTION THEIR ASSUMPTIONS – continue to press for bans on hand-held phones ONLY.

Remember: Pose your question AS MANY WAYS AS POSSIBLE. (Is HOLDING a phone while driving the problem? Or is TALKING on the phone while driving the problem?) By posing your question DIFFERENT WAYS not only will you be CHALLENGING YOUR ASSUMPTIONS, you’ll be INCREASING YOUR CHANCES of solving the RIGHT problem in the first place.

Finally... Hands-free or not, keep your driving-while-on-the-phone time to a minimum. Better yet, pull over to the curb. The life you save ... may be mine.
