NO SITTING

What's the first thing everyone does just before a meeting? Sit down. Of course! But what if we took an "OPPOSITES" approach? What if - instead of saying, "As soon as everyone gets seated we can get started" - we said, "As soon as we get finished, everyone can get seated." That is: What if we held our meetings with everyone having to STAND UP - and keep standing up - until the meeting was over? One such meeting attendee, Timothy Gotsick, recalls: "I had a project team once that had the shortest, most productive meetings I've ever participated in [because] we took all of the chairs out of the meeting room. It sounds a little goofy, but it insures that everyone stays on topic and on schedule." Or how about a meeting out-in-the-hall? No sitting. No leaning on the wall. Just staying on topic and on schedule.

NO PROBLEM

Wynton Marsalis and his jazz band were coming to town and I was determined to have my ten-year-old son meet him. My concern, though, was that if we lined up with everyone else after the show, we might not be successful. So we did the OPPOSITE - showed up two hours early and met the stage manager, Maurice, outside at the stage door. Maurice put us on the guest list and promised we'd be able to meet and talk with Wynton after the show. ("And if anyone gives you trouble, you just tell 'em to go get me.") After the show, as expected, there was a large crowd hoping to meet Wynton. Yet my son and I breezed right in - first class all the way. People in line stared at us, wondering, "What makes them so special?" What made us "special" was that we had tried an "OPPOSITES" approach - trying to meet the star BEFORE the show instead of AFTER.
We were escorted backstage (which itself was pretty cool) and the moment Wynton saw us he called out to my son, "I like you already. Look at that smile!" Wynton put his arm around him, posed for photos and gave my son a moment he'll remember for the reast of his life. "Dad, I met a real life hero!"

The solution? Take an "OPPOSITES" approach and meetings get shorter and memorable.
