Shake That ETHICS Brain! Volume 3, Issue 8
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
IN THIS ISSUE:

1. READERS RESPOND (Pro, Con, Conned & Convinced)
2. NOTHING ESLE

Our last three issues (devoted to ethics) generated more reader e-mail than any other subject.
Here are five brief comments that cover the spectrum:

Howard K., from Hohokus, New Jersey, writes:

"I try to adhere to an ethical life as well. In my case, when I come across an unethical person (such as your chiropractor) or business, I quit doing business with that person or business. I quit being a "whistle-blower" years ago - I'm now sixty-four - when I realized that in this society, the rule is to punish the right and reward the wrong."

Anna P., from Walla Walla, Washington, responds:

"Some things are just black and white in this life. When we know the difference between right and wrong, we should do the right thing – every time, no matter what. In your case, just maybe, someone will read your newsletter and that will get them to do the right thing in a situation where it WILL make a difference."

Janet R., from Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, explains:

"Insurance companies set the fees they will pay a practitioner. So doctors and chiropractors have to accept whatever rate of payment they deem 'normal and customary' - never mind what the going rates are in your community. I suspect this is why Dr's have no moral issue with doing some thing as 'unethical' as over charging. They over charge, regardless, in hopes of getting somewhere near what their going rate is supposed to be."

Kenneth Lay, from Houston, Texas, adds:

"Rules are important, but ... you should not be a slave to the rules either."

[Editor's Note: The above comment also appeared 5/15/06 in the New York Times.]

Finally, Pastor Martin, from Anywhere, USA, offers the following:

"There are two views on ethics:

(1) 'Anything's fair - if the ref doesn't see it.'

Or, my personal philosophy,

(2) 'Integrity is who you are when no one is looking.'

But here's the kicker: the real 'Ref' is always looking, and always sees it. And the final penalties aren't handed out until the game is over."

Joel Saltzman, from San Diego, California, adds:

"My thanks to the above subscribers and to everyone who wrote in to offer their comments. And a special 'Good luck to you!' to Kenneth Lay, from Houston, TX."
